A heat pump moves heat instead of making it, pulling warmth out of the outside air in winter the same way it pulls heat out of the house in summer. When the outdoor air gets cold enough, or the system has a fault a homeowner cannot see, the unit falls back on electric backup heat strips to keep the house comfortable. Backup heat works, but it costs far more to run than the heat pump itself, and a system that is quietly leaning on it every night can push a power bill up for weeks before anyone traces the cause.
It usually shows up as a bill that does not match the weather, or vents that blow warm air but never quite catch up on the coldest mornings. How we work a heat pump call, start to finish
System design comes first on any new install or replacement, sized to the house rather than swapped straight from the old equipment's tonnage. From there it is installation, thermostat setup and a full duct check, since a heat pump moving air through leaky or undersized ductwork will never perform the way the equipment is rated to.

Keeping it running: filters, seals and the checks that catch problems early
Preventative maintenance on a heat pump means the same air filter replacement schedule as any forced air system, plus duct sealing where a leak has opened up and started costing efficiency. Because a heat pump runs on the same compressor for cooling in summer and heating in winter, it logs more hours in a year than a furnace ever does, so catching a small issue at a maintenance visit is what keeps it from becoming a no heat call in January.
Thermostat installation and repair is part of the same visit when it is needed, since a heat pump's staging and backup heat behavior are set at the thermostat, and a mismatched or misconfigured thermostat is one of the more common reasons a system reaches for backup heat sooner than it should.
